Family medicine, originally family practice, is an area of the medical field devoted to full-spectrum, comprehensive medical care for individuals of all ages. The practitioner is called a family doctor or family physician. In the United States, the medical field is often referred to as family practice and/or general primary care.

Family doctors have a number of responsibilities associated with their role as an expert in the medical field, and they include treating all kinds of illnesses, including cardiovascular, respiratory, orthopedic, gynecological, mental health and infectious disease. Family medicine physicians also serve as consultants to physicians and health plans, provide educational programs for family practitioners, coordinate special projects to improve the quality of life of patients, and help patients develop a relationship of trust with their doctor and their doctors.

Family practitioners perform their own medical research and provide patients with information on their diagnosis, treatments, and preventive care of symptoms and diseases that can be successfully managed in their family practitioner's office. They also assist patients with their insurance, financial planning and other financial concerns. Family practitioners use the best available knowledge to treat patients and families.

Family practitioners work closely with their patients and families. Family practices have a wide range of educational programs and activities. These include clinical programs for children, adult, geriatric, and social medicine programs. Some are affiliated with medical schools and colleges. These schools offer courses in family medicine. There are also training programs in family practice.

Most family medicine practices are licensed to practice medicine. This license is usually obtained from the State Board of Medicine. It is also important for them to participate in continuing education programs to stay abreast of the latest advances in the field of family medicine. Some family practices also participate in state-sponsored programs to promote awareness and increase knowledge about the treatment of different diseases and their complications, especially children.

Family medicine is one of the fastest growing specialties among all areas of medicine. It is rewarding to practice this special type of medicine and it is very satisfying to see the good results it gives to patients.

Because of the tremendous demand for physicians with family practice expertise, the salary of doctors who practice family practice is very competitive. Family practitioners earn between seven hundred thousand dollars and ten thousand dollars a year and can even receive more.

Family practitioners also have a variety of options for their offices and services. They can decide to offer family medicine at one or more locations, or they can provide it only in a specific location. They may offer individual and family care services.

In order to become a family practitioner, a doctor must complete a four-year degree program at an accredited institution. He or she must pass the state exam.
